Our History

Our history begins at the beginning of the 20th century, when the Sobarzo family, a family of pioneers from the north of the country, ascend to the city of Puerto Natales with the promise of finding new directions. After beginning a variety of business and trying different enterprises, was the year 1971 when the younger son Delfus Sobarzo (better known as Sobita) rent the hotel known (for those years) "Hotel Colonial". From there, the close relationship of the family with the hotel and tourism of the region would begin. After several years of operation, in 1983 Sobita and his family decided to migrate to the city of Punta Arenas, where it continues to be linked to hotel and tourism, opening several hostels and residential areas and encouraging its children to continue with the legacy of the family . In the year 1990 Delfus buys an old house located in a small passage, called "Spain Passage". Completely renovated, this mansion would take the name of "Central Hostel".

In his vision, Delfus imagined that one day all the houses in front of his would become one of the main avenues of the city, and so it was. Sobita reached to see the avenue already finished just before leaving us the year 2002. A time before, in the year 2000 the great daughter of Sobita next to its mother, they founded "Central Hostel 2", that the year 2008 would become " Hostal Cordillera ", our central house. That same year, it would be the same daughter who would buy "Central Hostel" to again remodel it and turn it into what we now know as "Hostal Hielo Sur".

Hostal Hielo Sur continues with the line of its hostal Hostal Cordillera. One of our main goals has always been to make our passengers feel like they were at home. The idea is to feel the proximity of a Magellanic family and enjoy the beauty of the end of the world, our Chilean Patagonia. It is more than 40 years that have given us a vast experience in our field.

We proudly believe that Hostal Hielo Sur and Hostal Cordillera are an example of overcoming and leading the way in terms of practices and procedures in international tourism and we are always ready to serve you and make you feel the warmth of a home here in the end of the world.
